PHILADELPHIA, PA—  Philadelphia Outward Bound School (POBS) received a $5,000 grant from the Society of St. George of Philadelphia to support the POBS partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA program.

Through the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA program, Outward Bound staff provides mentorship, logistical resources, and financial support to young people seeking to realize their leadership potential by setting personalized goals and engaging in service projects, skills development, physical recreation, and an “adventurous journey,” often a wilderness expedition or exploration. POBS is one of 34 partners across the country licensed by the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA to implement the award program in their communities.

“We are thrilled to receive this gift from the Society of St. George of Philadelphia to help build future leaders in our region,” said Meg Wise, POBS executive director.

Since 2018, over 35 POBS  participants have been working on the Bronze or Silver Award. In 2020, five POBS students earned their Bronze Award from The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. Over 600 young people are currently pursuing their Award in the United States.

The Society of St. George of Philadelphia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering community and advancing English-focused educational opportunities for those living in the Philadelphia region.

“The Society of St. George of Philadelphia takes great pleasure in supporting the Duke of Edinburgh International Award USA,” said Bill Thompson, president, Society of St. George of Philadelphia. “It is a perfect combination of our interest in English heritage and in advancing local educational opportunities. POBS is a worthy recipient of our support.”

“Young people are in greater need than ever before to have opportunities to build their skills, leadership and resilience, through experiences outside the classroom,” said Elizabeth Higgins-Beard, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award USA. “This generous gift will allow the Philadelphia Outward Bound School and Award USA to continue to help youth reach their infinite potential.”
